Omaka Flying Start Scholarship Winners, 2011
Monday 14 February sees Marlborough Aero Club launch $6,000 worth of flying scholarships, which will give a helping hand to kick-start the careers of talented, young aviation enthusiasts.
Three ‘2011 Omaka Flying Start Scholarships’, each worth $2,000, have been sponsored by local aviation companies based at the airfield, including Marlborough Helicopters, Jem Aviation, Sounds Aero Maintenance, Classic Wings, Helicopter Training Little White Dog, Marlborough Aero Club and Flying New Zealand.
The Scholarships are aimed at providing financial assistance to help talented young people aged between 16 and 20 to achieve their first milestone in their aviation careers – their first solo.
Kevin Wilkey, Chief Flying Instructor at Marlborough Aero Club comments: “The Aero Club has a long and proud history of training pilots. Many of those who achieved their licences here have gone on to wonderful careers in the aviation industry, such as Ag Pilots, Flying Instructors and pilots for major airlines such as Pacific Blue, Mount Cook and Easy Jet.”
“There are many career options open to those with Commercial Pilots Licences and great fun to be had by those with a Private Pilots Licence. We hope that the scholarships help to get some flying careers off to the best possible start here at Omaka. We’ll be visiting the local colleges this week to talk about aviation careers and launch the scholarship, so come along and find out more.”
The Scholarships are open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 20 at the 1 April 2011 closing date. To enter, there is a $90 fee for a 20min Trial Flight. You will also be required to submit an application form along with a short essay on why you want to learn to fly (no longer than 300words).
